Aashram Season 4 Review

 “Landing” Show: Anti-India Sentiment

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti had filed a police complaint with the Vyalikaval police station against the show of Vir Das. The comedian Vir Das, who faced a huge backlash last year over his viral “Two Indias” monologue in the US, was set to hold a show at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram. The right-wing organization Hindu Janajagruti Samiti complained that it was not right to allow such a controversial person to hold a program in a communally sensitive area like Bengaluru.

Mr. Das’s monologue “I come from two Indias” had stirred a row a year ago when he was criticized for allegedly defaming the country. In a six-minute act, “I come from two Indias” he talked about the dual dark sides of India. In the ‘Two Indias’ speech, Vir Das described two contrasting faces of the country and refers to many controversial topics – from the Delhi gang rape to the farmer protests to pollution in broad strokes. Over the last few years, several shows by stand-up comedians in Bangalore and other cities in India were cancelled.

Earlier Vir Das had made derogatory statements against women, India’s Prime minister, and India as a whole at John F Kennedy Center in Washington DC, America, and denigrated the Nation. Hindu Janajagruti Samiti State Spokesperson Sri Mohan Gowda quoted the remark made by Vir Das :

In India, we worship women in the day and rape them at night’ during the performance,” which irk the population of Karnataka State. When Karnataka is already facing many law and order problems due to communal incidents, such events could vitiate the law and order and should not be allowed. We demand that this program should be cancelled immediately,” Mr. Gowda said. The right-wing organization complained that it was not right to allow such a controversial person to hold a program in a communally sensitive area like Bengaluru.

Thereafter, Mr. Vir Das uploaded a video on Twitter asking his audience if anything he said during the show defamed India or hurt any sentiment. The crowd responds in the negative

One Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP has invited stand-up comedian Vir Das to Kolkata, a day after his show in Bengaluru was cancelled at the last minute following protests by Hindu Right-Wing Groups. The protesting groups alleged that the show would hurt Hindu religious sentiments.

The comedian Vir Das while he was in the US, touched upon topical issues like the battle against COVID-19, incidents of rapes, farmers’ protests, a crackdown against comedians and petrol prices, inviting the ire of a section of social media as well as politicians.

While there have been prominent voices in support of the comedian, including TMC member Mahua Moitra as well as Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor, police complaints have been filed against him in Mumbai and Delhi also.

Earlier this year, Mr. Das had recalled that many years back, one of his stand-up shows was interrupted by cops over a joke about former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

Defending himself, Mr. Das underlined that it is his job to put out satire as long as he is able to do comedy.

Final Say

From the above, it is clear to most people that Vir Das is a controversial figure so far as comedy shows are concerned. Inspite of the above-mentioned adversaries Vir Das faced, it will be fantastic for his fans to conclude the year with this brand-new special “Landing”. So, if fans want to end the year 2022 with a high note of laughter, then Netflix is the OTT platform they need to add to their watch list.
