The Swimmers plot

In Syria, during the civil war their home was destroyed and so both the sisters Yusra and Sara Mardini need to leave the country. They traveled to Turkey from Lebanon. There they made arrangements to be smuggled into Greece on a dinghy. Along with the two others who were capable of swimming, the duo were responsible for saving the lives of people on board while the overcrowded dinghy’s engine stopped working when the migrants were in the middle of the Aegean Sea. After their terrifying ordeal within a year Yusra participated in two swimming events under the Refugee Olympic squad held in the Olympics, Rio.

The Swimmers — Manal and Nathalie Issa

The real life sisters, Manal and Nathalie Issa are portraying the siblings in the movie “The Swimmers”. Nathalie Issa portrays Yusra, and Manal Issa plays Sara. For both the sisters, this is their first global position. M’anal portrayed Lina in the 2015 movie Parisienne, and also starred in “The Anger”. This movie was about a young Lebanese girl who leaves her little hamlet and develops feelings for a European man. She also appeared in The Sea Ahead. In the Syrian film, My Favorite Fabric, Nathalie had the lead role. Manal Issa has admitted that she couldn’t swim and so she initially turned down the job offer. But the production crew helped and taught the sisters on how to swim. At first, it was incredibly challenging, but we persisted. When you can float, the water feels pleasant and you want to freestyle; similarly, when you have a goal, you want to accomplish it.

Crew

Sally El Hosaini, who directed and co-wrote the film, is also credited with scripting it with Jack Throne. The film’s score is being composed by Steven Prince, who won both an Oscar and an Emmy for his work on the score for Gravity. Christopher Ross, who shot Blackout, Room, and Black Sea, was in charge of the camerawork for this film. Shaheen Baig, the casting director, did a great job selecting the Issa sisters to play Yusra and Sarah. To be fair, the cast and crew of this film seem rather impressive. If they succeed, the audience’s memories of this biography will endure.

What other actors are in The Swimmers?

James Krishna Floyd, who starred in The Good Karma Hospital, also has a role in The Swimmers. He initially took part in the movie My Brother The Devil under the direction of Sally El Hosaini. Ali Suliman (The Promise, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and Matthias Schweighöfer, who plays swim coach Sven, as well as Carlotta De Gregori, Alfredo Tavares, Bridgitta Roy, Victoria Valcheva, and Ahmed Malek, who plays fellow refugee Nizar, all make appearances in the film.

The true story behind The Swimmers

Yusra and her older sister Sara Mardini left Syria in August 2015 after their home was destroyed. They had grown up in a neighbourhood of Damascus. They paid to be smuggled into Greece on a dinghy after they arrived in Turkey, but the overloaded boat capsized in the middle of the Aegean Sea.

Until they arrived at Lesbos, the sisters and two other people who could swim ended up swimming alongside the boat to stop it from sinking. Sara had to give up swimming after suffering a shoulder injury during the trip. Yusra continued her swimming training and competed in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympics under the banner of the IOC Refugee Olympics squad. The schoolgirls made their home in Berlin with their parents, who had also fled Syria. 2020 saw her compete in Tokyo as well. Sara went back to Greece to assist additional migrants who were arriving by sea, but in 2018 she and 23 other aid workers were detained on a range of crimes related to human smuggling. Sara was imprisoned for more than 100 days, but Amnesty International supported her and her detention was called ludicrous. The investigation is still underway, and the November trial has been postponed. Sara currently resides in Germany after being granted refuge there.

Time Always Moves Forward

Neddy’s walk home through the neighbourhood pools becomes a trip through his life spanning many years, proving that time marches on regardless of how much resistance is put up. Neddy is a virtuoso at denying his own reality. The narrator tells us right away that Neddy is “far from young,” but he tries to act his age by sliding down a bannister and plunging into a pool. The afternoon spent by the Westerhazys’ pool could have happened at any period in the past or future. Neddy’s plan to swim home sounds like a variation on a theme that has been explored before.
