The RIG: STREAM IT OR KICK It?
The opening shot: deep in the water, it appears that the rift has opened up. At the surface there is Kinloch Bravo, a massive oil drilling rig.
The main idea: The staff on the Kinloch Bravo are coming to the point of rotation, at which point most of them will head home to their families following their lengthy stay on shore on the Scottish shore.
The rig’s captain, Magnus (Iain Glen) is dealing with the change in personnel, and the addition that of Rose (Emily Hampshire) she was being sent by the oil firm to assess the Kinloch field to determine whether the money they are spending could be better utilized elsewhere.
The crew members scheduled to leave are eager to get out and depart, including the young and brash tech Baz (Calvin Demba) who is furious when he discovers the next helicopter out and Fulmer (Martin Compston) Communications specialist, taking his place.
At an all-hands’ meeting, Magnus tells the crew that the next choppers were diverted to Bravo’s sister rig due to an emergency. This angers the crew members who are due to return home, and especially Hutton (Owen Teale) an older crew member who has voiced his criticism of Magnus his direction.
The power is then cut off. As the crew tries to get the equipment back operational, Magnus decides to shut the drill down, despite his objections to Rose. Fulmer realizes that the radio connecting to the mainland isn’t functioning.
When the power is restored but they’ll need to face another challenge as a thick fog covers the entire equipment, reducing visibility to near zero. To find out the reason, Magnus sends Fulmer and Baz up to the highest point of the tower in which they engage in an altercation.
As they descend Baz’s tether disconnects and he fallsdown, injuring him severely. When Cat (Rochenda Sandall) is the medic on the rig is doing everything she can to ensure that Baz alive and aware that he’s required to be transported by air to hospital Hutton gets angry with Magnus more than ever before. However, Hutton’s fury isn’t just directed at his boss. when Hutton gets into Cat’s face regarding the need to give Baz better medical treatment, Cat takes him down literally.
As Hutton is provoking a staff revolt over the helicopter’s fog-shrouded platform, Magnus and Rose get on the bandwagon; as Magnus exposes some harsh facts regarding the plans of the company for the rig, however there is a surprise addition to the team.
A classic survival story that has a twist. A twist
It’s not as if a survival narrative is something new in its own. The first season of The Terroralso contains the characters fighting for survival in the elements. However the story is that in the Rigon Prime Video, we’re getting a little deeper. The show isn’t just about humans fighting against the elements, but the entire planet is fighting back.
The entire story takes place at Kinloch Bravo. As a strange fog forms in and communication is lost in communication with “the shore” (the shoreline of Scotland) It gets very scary and a bit bizarre. And it happens quickly!
The OIM (Offshore Installation Manager) and rig’s boss, Magnus (Iain Glen) will do his best to ensure that the crew is working together, but it’s not an simple job. On top of that we also get Rose (Emily Hampshire) who is focused on business and optimizing to “reach the quotas” for the role of Pictor Energy Company Rep.
The members in The Rig
Iain Glen, who many will recognize from Game of Thrones is the crew member of the oil rig leader, Magnus. In his characteristic serene and calm manner, Iain Glen is credible as someone who is able to lead a team composed of a variety of individuals. He is determined to remain at peace and get ahead of any obstacles swiftly but it’s an uphill struggle.
Also believable as convincing is Emily Hampshire as Rose, the ambitious rep for oil companies who is also a scientist. She initially seems unassuming and calculating However there’s additional to the character. She’s trying to help Big Oil see the financial benefit of moving to more green energy sources.
This is just setting the scene for the possibility of conflict. But, it quickly becomes clear that the true threat is out of their reach. The fog is carrying something that can affect (or more accurately, affects) those who are exposed to it in a prolonged period. Then after that, the conditions get even worse!
What TV Shows Does It Remind you of? Take The Terror and 1899, and change the settings to an oil rig of the present You get The Rig.
Our Review: Created by David Macpherson, The Rigfits is a good fit for the category of “stranded crew members turn on one to form alliances and trying to return home” as we’ve seen several instances of over the last couple of years. Similar to the instances we’ve mentioned above, there’s a mystical aspect to the show that’s slightly understated in the initial episode, but is clearly evident in the final scene and we’re able to sense that it will become more noticeable as the season progresses forward.
What exactly is this? It’s true that they’re more than flat archetypes, however we don’t have enough information about each of them to know what their motives are. The characters range from exuberant young men such as Baz to the gruff veterans, who are angered and bitter, like Hutton as well as more tolerant and accepting like Alwyn (Mark Bonnar). Rose can be described as the corporate muckety-muck. She’s connected to struggling Fulmer. Magnus is the boss from the past. We know that for a fact We’re not quite sure what else we’ll discover.
The thing that keeps it from turning out to be a joke can be the actors. The cast that stars alongside Hampshire is a star-studded cast of British actor-characters who elevate their characters that are a bit bland by taking whatever grain of their personalities they’re given, and executing the character. Since there are numerous characters to contend with, and an array of different storiesto tell, shows like the Rig requires actors who are able to squeeze as much of their limited characters that they possibly can. Most of the actors can do this.
Sexuality and Skin There was no mention of it in the initial episode.
Parting Shot The ash is falling and Baz unexpectedly appears to be on the deck. “It’s not enough,” Baz says. “It’s already been started.”
Sleeper Star One of the principal characters the character of Bonnar Alwyn is the one with the most ambiguity in the very first episode but due to the fact that Bonnar portrays the character with such an empathetic resignation, he’s fascinating to observe.
The Most Pilot-y Line Rose informs Fulmer she wanted to become paleontologist “What do you think about digging out dinosaurs is that?” Fulmer responds. “Yeah however, it was too very much like life in past times. Therefore, I’ll have to deal on them.” Dinosaurs is what she’s talking about, even though it’s not clear from how the script is composed.
Our Request: STREAM IT. While there’s not as much of character development like the Rigstarts are a comedy, the acting is top-notch and it helps the tension building around Kinloch Bravo Kinloch Bravo feel palpable.
