Review

Karnesh Sharma’s Clean Slate Filmz is back with Anvitaa Dutt after 2020 Bulbul to continue the initiative of backing women telling women’s stories. The movie gets Tripti Dimri in the front seat with the solid support of debutant Babil Khan and Swastika Mukherjee, son of the Late Irfan Khan.

You will see a fictitious period drama about a playback singer. Qala is an unspoken path and unfamiliar in terms of relations. It goes beyond the obvious things to discover the underlying complexities of a mother-daughter relationship, a rare sight in Hindi movies. The latter has either villainized or overlooked the conflict for the gallery. Also, Qala dares to see the raw, even the ugly inside of seemingly normal relations, with a heart-aching longing and regret at the center.

Qala Movie

You will see the slow-burn tragedy that strikes a crescendo in the climax without making any noise is a haunting psychological set of drama in the 1930s and 1940s with a backdrop of music. Tripti Dimri, as a young girl from Himachal, has hopes and dreams to live up to the talent and reputation of her illustrious family of classical singers. Swastika Mukherjee, her mother, says that Naam Ke Aagey Pandit Hona Chahiye Aur Naam Ke Peeche bai Nai makes sure that her daughter knows her expectations and that she should fulfill them.

The impressionable daughter craves validation and wishes to win over the taskmaster’s mom. The mom is captivated by the divine energy in Babil’s voice Jagan. She chooses him and shows affection as a mother-son relationship is seen between them, and she is a deserving successor of her family’s legacy.

Qala is told to get married and be with their husband instead of taking a career in film music as that is not a place for respected women. Qala views it as a case of sexism, unfair treatment, and patriarchy meted out to women.

She is seen as unnoticed she feels by her mother. But her mother sees her through her daughter’s insecurities and strongly thinks that it is only fair to empower Jagan, who is committed and talented. Qala, in this way, resorts to questionable ways to achieve her dream, but it comes with a cost. She is traumatized and haunted by her past things.

The story of the movie opens Pandora’s box of secrets as it shifts along, shuttling between present and past, love and jealousy, anger and remorse. It observes the twisted mother-daughter dynamic and tension and unravels like an emotional horror movie.

You will see the beauty of Anvitaa Dutt’s writing and story telling lies in an innovative world and her narrative of alternating viewpoints. You will see a mother-daughter dance of psychological warfare as the ambition of Qala clashes with the mother’s disdain. The classical music of Amit Trivedi lies at the heart of the movie Qala and the instrumental in taking the story forward.

Apart from Anvita, the songs are beautifully written by Kausar Munir, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Varun Grover, and Swanand Kirkire. Singers Shahid Mallya and Sireesha Bhagavatula, who sang for the leading characters, did a good job.

Light is used in scenes to maintain intrigue. The childhood of Qala is home in the mountains and adult life in Kolkata. The Colour palette, the set design, and the costumes are striking. Meenal Agrawal (Production Designer) and Siddharth Diwan (Cinematography) deserve a special thing for creating a world that exudes hypnotic, unsettling heartache and energy. While the pace feels sedentary on many events, the pain and inner turmoil find an outlet even in silence.

The last thing is all three major leading actor transport themselves to the poignant world of ambition, love, and deceit. Dimri is gorgeous in the effective and retro avatar but noticeably limited in expressions. Swastika Mukherjee is powerful and restrained as the mom. There is a specific earnestness to Babil Khan, something the celebrated father exuded. He shows glimpses of what he may cater as an actor, and the future looks bright for him.
